What is Silverclay?
Silverclay, aka Precious metal clay or Art clay silver, is an inspirational product consisting of very fine pure silver particles, water and a non toxic organic plant based binder. It feels and behaves like actual clay but once dried and fired (once the water has dried and the binder has burned away) the silver particles fuse and it becomes pure silver.
The properties of silverclay lend themselves to moulding and sculpting in an almost endless variety of ways! My favourite is for moulding from natural forms – fossils, shells, twigs, leaves and other found objects.. I’ve even made a tiny Yoda!
Silverclay is a very eco-friendly material. It is made with 100% recycled silver, salvaged from old x-ray plates, photographic film and electrical components. All dried bits and dust can be reconstituted and used again so endlessly recycled. It’s quite energy efficient, compared to other metalsmithing processes, as it fires at a low temperature (650-7– degrees C).
